ChatGPT > Google?

July 18, 2025

🔍 AI Idea of the Week

“More people are going to ChatGPT than almost any other site on the internet.”

Over the past year, ChatGPT’s traffic has grown by 135%, while sites like Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia are quietly shrinking.

Here’s what’s happening:

More people are skipping search engines and going straight to AI for answers. It’s faster, less cluttered, and more to the point.

Instead of typing something into Google, clicking around, and skimming through forums or blog posts, people are just… asking ChatGPT. And getting the answer in one shot.

Some quick numbers:
📉 Google: –1.45%
📉 WhatsApp: –8.99%
📉 Wikipedia: –7.5%
📈 ChatGPT: +135%

And Gen Z? They don’t search the way previous generations did.

More than half now turn to TikTok or ChatGPT before they even think about using Google.

They’re watching a 30-second TikTok or getting the answer directly from AI.

Search engines used to be the default starting point for everything. Now, more and more of us are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, draft emails, troubleshoot problems, plan trips, learn new skills, or just get unstuck.

It’s becoming second nature to skip the search bar and just ask the question.

So here’s a better question:

What are you using AI for right now?

And maybe more importantly: what aren’t you using it for yet?

Because if you’re still doing certain tasks manually, digging through tabs, reusing old templates, chasing information down the hard way, there’s probably an easier (and faster) way to handle it.

Don’t dig through 10 tabs for research. Ask Perplexity to summarize or compare tools, trends, and content in one go.

Editing videos frame by frame is slow. Use Descript to cut, trim, and caption just by editing the transcript.

Rewatching meetings to take notes is a drain. Let Fireflies record, transcribe, and summarize your calls automatically.

And these are just a few examples… AI can streamline almost every part of your workflow.

We’ll share some ideas below on how AI can simplify your workflow, boost your visibility in AI search results, and help you get more done.

⚡ AI Signals

🧠 Canva teams up with Claude AI for smart design support
Canva is partnering with Anthropic to bring Claude into its design platform. The AI assistant can now help with content suggestions, design tips, and even direct support, all inside the Canva editor.

Why it matters: This could make design tools way more accessible to non-designers. Instead of guessing what looks good or how to write better copy, users now get real-time help from a conversational AI.

🖥️ Microsoft Copilot can now “see” your screen
Microsoft is rolling out a huge Copilot upgrade: the AI assistant can now scan what’s on your screen, like documents, spreadsheets, or apps, and help you take action based on what it sees.

Why it matters: Instead of switching between windows and prompting it manually, you can just ask Copilot to summarize, explain, or even edit what’s right in front of you.

📱 Google’s Gemini gets smarter on phone calls
Android phones are getting a new “AI Mode” that lets Gemini take over live phone calls. It can answer calls, summarize conversations, and even speak on your behalf for simple tasks like confirming appointments or asking questions.

Why it matters: Google’s making the smartphone experience more hands-off, and giving you back time you didn’t even realize you were wasting.

🛠 Tool We’re Testing: NotebookLM

This time, we’re exploring NotebookLM, an AI tool that lets you interact directly with your documents and notes.

Instead of skimming through pages of notes or PDFs, you can ask questions directly and get clear answers based only on what you’ve uploaded.

We’ve been trying it out, and it’s been surprisingly helpful for speeding up research and planning.

You can upload anything, a strategy doc, a client onboarding guide, even a product catalog, and then ask questions like:

→ “What should I focus on for Q3?”
→ “Summarize this for my team”
→ “What’s missing from this pitch deck?”

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Go to notebooklm.google.com

  2. Upload a doc, podcast transcript, or paste in your notes

  3. Ask it anything

The newest update adds Featured Notebooks, which are curated workspaces built around a specific topic.

Each one gives you more than just text: you get source excerpts, key takeaways, visual maps of the main ideas, even audio explainers so you can listen while you learn.

There’s one that walks through The Economist’s big predictions for 2025. Another helps parents understand the psychology of raising kids in the digital age.

You can find all of them under the new “Featured Notebooks” section on the left sidebar in NotebookLM. They're great if you want a head start on a complex topic.

And now you can upload podcast transcripts too. NotebookLM will pull out the main takeaways, highlight key quotes, and let you search across episodes instantly. Super handy if you’re repurposing content.

🌟 Prompt of the Week: SEO for AI Search

Ranking on Google is no longer just about being on the first page.

Now, AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews are answering questions without sending people to your site.

If your content isn’t showing up in those answers, you’re basically invisible.

If you want to optimize your content for AI-generated results, try this:

“Act like an expert in AI-driven SEO. I’ll share my website, target audience, and what I want to be included in AI search results for.

Give me a strategy to improve my visibility inside tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

Include suggestions for content structure, key phrases to include, schema markup, and how to position my content so it gets picked up by large language models.”

You can follow up with:

→ “Here’s my blog post. How can I rewrite it to be included in AI answers for [keyword]?”

→ “What content formats are most likely to be surfaced by LLMs?”

→ “What topics should I cover if I want to be quoted in AI-generated summaries?”

In a world where fewer people are clicking through to websites, being referenced is the new SEO win.
